Settlement date is a securities industry term describing the date on which a trade (bonds, equities, foreign exchange, commodities, etc.) settles. That is, the actual day on which transfer of cash or assets is completed and is usually a few days after the trade was done.

When does settlement occur? For most stock trades, settlement occurs two business days after the day the order executes, or T+2 (trade date plus two days). For example, if you were to execute an order on Monday, it would typically settle on Wednesday.

The rationale for the delayed settlement is to give time for the seller to get documents to the settlement and for the purchaser to clear the funds required for settlement. T+2 is the standard settlement period for normal trades on a stock exchange, and any other conditions need to be handled on an "off-market" basis.

Standard settlement periods include T+1 (one business day after the trade), T+2, or T+3, indicating the number of business days after the trade date. The settlement date affects buyers' and sellers' cash flows and risk exposure. Buyers must have funds to settle the transaction, while sellers rely on timely payment.

The three-day rule in stocks mandates that buyers and sellers in stock transactions fully settle their business within three days of executing a trade. A buyer must send payment to the brokerage firm involved in a trade within three business days of making a purchase.

While the stock market securities now adhere to T+1 cycle, the same transaction takes one day longer in case of mutual fund units. Earlier it used to take a minimum of three days, but with effect from February 1, the settlement cycle was cut down by one day. This means now it will take T+2 for the transaction to close.

A transaction date represents the date on which a transaction occurs whereas the settlement date is the day on which the transaction is finalised, that is, the ownership of the security is transferred to the buyer.

It's when ownership passes from the seller to you, and you pay the balance of the sale price. The seller sets the settlement date in the contract of sale. As a general rule, property settlement periods are usually 30 to 90 days, but they can be longer or shorter.
