Reference List Order Arrange entries in alphabetical order by the surname of the first author followed by the initials of the author's given name(s). When alphabetizing names, disregard any spaces or punctuation marks in two-word surnames. Also disregard anything in parentheses or square brackets.

In the Review pane, in Tracking select Simple Markup. The footnote numbering will still be out of sequence (due to a deleted reference). Now, in Changes, select Accept > Accept All Changes and Stop Tracking. The numbering will now be in sequence!

Citations listed on the bibliography should be done in alphabetical order. Footnotes and endnotes are numbered sequentially and correspond to a superscript number somewhere in the text. The footnote generally is placed at the bottom of the page where the corresponding number lives.

Typographical devices such as the asterisk (*) or dagger (?) may also be used to point to notes; the traditional order of these symbols in English is *, ?, ?, §, ?, ¶. Other symbols, including the #, ?, ?, ?, and ?, have also been used.

Each footnote should appear at the bottom of the page that includes its numbered in-text reference. For note numbers in the text, use superscript. Indent the first line of each note half an inch like a paragraph in the main text. Use a short line (or rule) to separate footnotes from the main text.

The footnote number should be placed at the end of the sentence or the end of a clause in a sentence, after any punctuation.

In footnotes, the author's first name is listed first, while in the bibliography, the author's last name is listed first. The titles of books and journals are put in italics. The titles of articles are put in quotation marks. All key words in titles are capitalized.

Footnotes should be numbered consecutively in the order they appear throughout your paper. Each note should have a unique number; don't use the same number again even if you cite the same source repeatedly. Footnote numbers are usually placed at the end of the relevant clause or sentence.
