Enrolling a child in a Texas charter school is a two-step process: application for admission and then enrollment in the charter school. Application for admission is completed using the statewide common admission application, known as the Charter Student Admission Application (CSAA).

Charter schools are tuition-free public schools that are open to all students, varying in mission and model. They serve all types of students, many with needs that aren't well-served by a one-size-fits-all traditional public school.

All state-chartered schools in Texas are authorized by TEA and serve as their own Local Education Agency (LEA). They are required to meet higher standards for academic and financial performance than traditional school districts.

Charter school applications are due to the sponsor (school district). We recommend contacting the school district for specific application requirements. In addition, section 1002.33(6), F.S., requires charter school applicants to submit an application on a model application form developed by the Department.

As a general rule, charter schools are open enrollment and must accept any student who applies. There are exceptions though. A charter is only allowed to serve students in the grades in its approved charter. The school may also only accept students who live in the charter's approved geographic boundary.

Public schools in Texas receive state funds based on the average daily attendance (ADA) of students. This process is the same for independent school districts and for open-enrollment charter schools. The Foundation School Program (FSP) is the source for these funds.
