Paper titles with a lien can be released by the lienholder signing a lien satisfaction form. Electronic Liens have to be removed electronically.

Each release requires a digital signature and secure confirmation to ensure that liens don't get released accidentally or fraudulently. Employee access to releasing liens can be restricted. A title can be printed and mailed to you from the DMV while the lien is active or at the time of release.

Selling a Vehicle with an Existing Lien For the vehicle to be legally sold, the lien must first be satisfied. Once the lienholder reports to FLHSMV that the lien has been satisfied, the title can be transferred. Consumers can trade in a vehicle with an existing lien at a dealership.

Once the request is completed online, the converted paper title will then be mailed to the address reflected on the owner's motor vehicle record. Paper titles are generally received within 3-4 weeks.

This document is proof the lien has been released. If you would like to remove the lien holder's name from the title, you must fill out an application for a reissue title (TR-720B) and bring it, along with your current vehicle registration, title and lien release to any one of the tag offices.

A release of a lien may be executed in the lien release section located on the front of the certificate of title, on this form, or on the lienholder's letterhead. A release of lien on the lienholder's letterhead must contain the same information as required in the ?Vehicle Information? section of this form.

Once you pay off your loan, your lienholder will send you an official release of lien letter. You'll take that to your state BMV or DMV (or, in some cases, to your local city/town clerk's office) along with your current title and apply for an updated title.
