The longer formula is left at room temperature, the greater the risk of infection if consumed. If your baby contracts a foodborne illness, it can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, dehydration.

If you run out of formula and can't find any, in a pinch you can give oral rehydration solution (such as Pedialyte, Enfalyte, or a store brand) for a couple of days. Babies older than 4 to 6 months can also get pureed (finely ground) foods.

It's fine to give your baby room temperature or even cold formula. If your baby prefers warm formula, place a filled bottle in a bowl of warm water or run under warm water. Test the temperature by putting a couple of drops on the back of your hand or wrist. The formula should feel lukewarm ? not hot.

If you prepare formula ahead of time, store it in the refrigerator. You can use pre-made formula for up to 24 hours. Open containers of ready-made formula, concentrated formula, and formula prepared from concentrate can be stored safely in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours.

Prepared infant formula can spoil if it is left out at room temperature. Use prepared infant formula within 2 hours of preparation and within one hour from when feeding begins. If you do not start to use the prepared infant formula within 2 hours, immediately store the bottle in the fridge and use it within 24 hours.

If your baby doesn't finish all the formula, throw it away within one hour. Storing half-finished bottles of formula for later is risky because when your baby drinks from a bottle of formula, bacteria from their mouth get into the milk.

When you're out and it's time to feed your baby, simply add the correct amount of hot water (it has to be hot to kill any bacteria), put the right amount of formula in and give it a shake, wait for it to cool to the right temperature, and hey presto ? baby's lunch!

Take the formula out just before you leave, and transport it in a cool bag with an ice pack and use within four hours.
