National Mall and Memorial Parks and the other DC area National Park Service parks require a permit for all photography and filming that is not categorized as general visitor use. When in doubt if a permit is needed, contact the Division of Permits Management prior to going to the park to shoot photos or video.

The Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting provides permit applications and instructions. Apply for a new film, video, and photography permit. Leave a message after hours and you'll get a call back during business hours.

A permit is required when shooting at any of monuments on the National Mall, as well as most other parks and public locations in DC. In this post, I'll be explaining why permits are important, who needs one, how to obtain it, and additionally how to handle it during your session.

One permit is good for one monument. So if you want to shoot at say the Lincoln Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial, you will have to apply for two permits. Most of the popular monuments, like the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and the Tidal Basin, do require a photography permit.

You will need a photo permit. There are a lot of lovely non-permit areas to take your pictures at around the city, but if you have your heart set on a specific Chicago skyline view, just keep in mind it may require a photo permit. Make sure to consider this and leave enough time to obtain the permit.

A film permit is required in the District of Columbia for all non-personal filming activity (except reporters/journalists/crew covering live breaking news events). Tourists or others filming strictly for personal use do not require a permit.

Tripods are permitted everywhere on the National Mall, with the exception of the interior spaces of the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. Nighttime tripod use is also permitted.
