Full-time students are typically enrolled in 15 to 18 credit hours. If your goal is to graduate in 4 years with no summer coursework, plan to take 15 credit hours each fall and spring semester. Full-time status for financial aid purposes is a minimum of 12 credit hours.

If you fail, it's usually smart to retake the class. Most colleges will allow you to retake a class one time and replace your new grade with the failed one. This looks better on transcripts and for financial aid purposes.

Even if you do fail, you can retake the class and ask for help. Although it will negatively impact your GPA and could affect your financial obligations, you can bounce back. Start by asking for more help and studying differently or harder if you retake the course.

Full-time students must maintain a minimum of 12 credits, and part-time can take up to a maximum of 11. Students can register for a maximum of 17 credits until the Friday prior to the start of the semester when the credit limit will be raised to 19 credits. The terminology is slightly different today, but in general, you must withdraw if you fail exceed 8 failures or excluded courses, or 10 unusable course attempts. Most programs require a minimum average of 60% to advance, but some majors require grades of 65% or even 70% in some courses to advance.

While colleges can allow up to 3, and even 4 fails of a class, it is best to not let it get to this if you can, and to do whatever you can to improve your grades.
