A bareboat charter, or demise charter, is an arrangement for the chartering or hiring of a ship or boat for which no crew or provisions are included as part of the agreement. Instead, the people who rent the vessel from the owner are responsible for taking care of such things.

Charterer is a fellow who has taken the vessel on hire thus becoming the commercial operator of the vessel. Now when the shipper loads his goods his Bill of lading is issued by the charterer (as a carrier) and not the shipowner. These are known as CHARTER PARTY BILL OF LADINGS.

While it is possible to have a charter party of less than the entire ship, as a general rule a charter party deals with the full reach of a ship while a contract of affreightment deals with carriage of goods forming only part of the cargo and coming under a bill of lading.

Types of charters. The three most common types of charter contracts are the voyage charter, the time charter, and the demise (or bareboat) charter.

There are usually two types of bill of lading, the House Bill of Lading and the Master Bill of Lading. An ocean bill of lading indicates a particular carrier through which the goods have been placed to their final destination and the conditions for transporting the shipment to its final destination.

The main differences between a liner bill of lading and a charter party bill of lading are in the origin and disclosures. The liner bill of lading comes from the master of the vessel or the captain, indicating that he or she has received the goods.
