Law schools are most interested in academic letters of recommendation and some will specifically indicate that the letters of recommendation must be academic. Even if the schools don't specify, academic letters are preferred.

A judge also may permit the use of the judge's name as a reference, and respond to a request for a personal recommendation when solicited by a selection authority such as a prospective employer, judicial selection committee or law school admissions office.

If you have not had recent contact with past professors (say, the last five years), think about requesting letters from employers and/or colleagues. Never submit recommendations from relatives or family friends. Most admissions committees will not consider them.

Choose your recommender Ask professors for whom you worked as a research assistant; they can speak to your research skills and professionalism. You can also ask a professor who supervised your work in a clinic or was an advisor for your student organization.
