What's the difference between SMS vs. MMS? A text message of up to 160 characters without an attached file is known as an SMS, while a text that includes a file?like a picture, video, emoji, or a website link?becomes an MMS.

The maximum size of the text message can vary depending on your device and firmware version. Any message over the maximum size (sometimes 160 characters) will automatically be sent as an MMS.

Sending texts to short codes is not included in any free text bundle that might be part of a customer contract, so it will always cost 1 text at the standard rate. If a phone is on a pay as you go tariff and there is no airtime credit on the phone, then you won't be able to send a text to any short code.

Disadvantages of MMS messaging MMS costs more. MMS images and media may not be received by a lot of your audience (their device may not be compatible with getting rich-media texts). MMS needs you to hire a resource to design eye-catching graphics (videos too) that can be sent. And this too will add to your costs.

MMS is a more suitable option when you need to send messages longer than 160 characters. With a generous 1,600-character limit, it can be more cost-effective and user-friendly to send a single MMS message instead of multiple SMS messages. MMS is also necessary when sending images, videos, or other multimedia content.
