A Chart and Publication Correction Record Card system is an effective approach to keep track of corrections. When a new Notice to Mariners arrives, the navigator does not immediately update every chart in the portfolio, he instead creates a card for each chart and records the correction on this card.

The second mate is the third most experienced deck department officer after the Captain/Master and Chief mate. One of their priorities is to update charts and publications, keeping them current, making passage plans, and all aspects of ship navigation.

From start up-Menu (on the left bottom section in chartco), click on Corrections. Click on ENC (top bar) and corrections (Right side bar). This list will show you the pending corrections to your active cells. Click on the ?Collect and transfer to ECDIS? at the bottom of the screen.

To correct a chart, look up the number of the chart in the index at the front of the NTM, by the chart number there will be a list of all the corrections that relate to that chart. Each correction is given a number to identify it. You then need to look up the correction to discover the details.

On receiving a chart or a notification through weekly notices to mariners which replaces a previous chart , insert in the chart correction log 'replaced by' or 'cancelled by' against the mentioned chart. The folio number to be inserted on the replacement chart received.

In the interests of good seamanship, it is vitally important that all charts are corrected up to date to the latest Notice to Mariners and NP5011 standards, to ensure safety critical information is applied to each chart.

Permits are used to control the permission to use a chart. They prevent unofficial copying and distribution.
