The Film Office issues permits to productions filming on location in the City of New York and provides free police assistance, free parking privileges and access to most exterior locations free of charge. Not all filming activity requires a permit.

Tripods are permitted everywhere on the National Mall, with the exception of the interior spaces of the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. Nighttime tripod use is also permitted. A permit is required when shooting at any of monuments on the National Mall, as well as most other parks and public locations in DC. In this post, I'll be explaining why permits are important, who needs one, how to obtain it, and additionally how to handle it during your session.

Permits ? Filming on private property will not require a permit. However, if the production will also require use of public property, such as placement of equipment on streets or sidewalks or parking vehicles on a public street, a permit may be required.

Filming permits are permits issued by governments to allow the filming of motion pictures. Every city and state has some sort of council or office that handles filming permits. Obtaining film permits is part of the process of location scouting, and they are usually the responsibility of the location manager.

National Mall and Memorial Parks and the other DC area National Park Service parks require a permit for all photography and filming that is not categorized as general visitor use. When in doubt if a permit is needed, contact the Division of Permits Management prior to going to the park to shoot photos or video.

One permit is good for one monument. So if you want to shoot at say the Lincoln Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial, you will have to apply for two permits. Most of the popular monuments, like the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and the Tidal Basin, do require a photography permit.
