The easiest way to redline a document is for both parties to work on it together. While that's not always possible in person, it can be easily accomplished through digital contracting. By using a cloud-based redlining editor, everyone involved can look at the contract at any time to edit it or approve or deny changes.

Always put a contract amendment in writing and make sure both parties sign and date it. Reference the title of the contract, if applicable; its original parties; and original signing date, so that it is clear what document you are amending. Attach the amendment to the original contract.

Alterations on the Contract (or Strikethroughs) You can make changes directly on the contract by using a redline or strikethrough method.

Enable the redline feature by clicking the Track Changes icon. While it might look different depending on your computer's version of Word, the icon often appears as a piece of paper with a bent corner, red and gray lines and a blue pencil laying over it. You can also turn on the feature by pressing Control + Shift + E.

A contract amendment allows the parties to make a mutually agreed-upon change to an existing contract. An amendment can add to an existing contract, delete from it, or change parts of it. The original contract remains in place, only with some terms altered by way of the amendment.

It is not illegal to alter a contract once it has been signed. However, it must be materially changed, meaning that if an important part of the contract is altered by the change, it must be made by mutual consent of both parties.

A modification of contract is any change, in part or whole, occurring to a legally binding agreement between two or more parties. Any contract can be modified before or after signing the agreement, but all parties must agree to the changes. If any party doesn't agree to the modification, the changes are invalid.

A redline contract is one that has been edited by one or more parties. That change is made with a different color ink (red, black, or blue) than the original one. Redlining includes making changes to terms, the order of each section, whether a section should be omitted, and grammar edits.

If the formation or performance of the contract will require a party to break the law, the contract is invalid. Examples of contracts with illegal subject matter: Agreement for the sale or distribution of prohibited substances, such as drugs. Contracts to engage in an illegal activity.

Both parties must agree to the changes. Depending on the extent of changes, you may be able to simply amend the document. In this case, both parties must sign approval of the changes. In some cases, it may be best to create an entirely new contract.
