A watermark is a faded background image that displays behind the text in a document. You can use them to indicate a document's state (confidential, draft, etc.), add a subtle company logo, or even for a bit of artistic flair.

Double-click near the top of the page to open the header. Move the cursor over the watermark until you see the four-headed arrow, and then click the watermark to select it. Under Picture Tools, select Format. Try selecting Recolor, Brightness, or Contrast.

If inserting a watermark on some pages causes it to disappear on others, try using a custom watermark to put the watermark on all pages. Tip: If you already have a watermark, remove it, or you'll have two on the same page. Go to Design > Watermark > Custom Watermark.

If you want it to appear on every page in the document, from the Watermark dropdown, click Custom Watermark. The Custom Watermark dialog box will be displayed. Click Text watermark, from the Text dropdown, select your required text, click Apply, click OK, click Close.

Insert a watermark On the Design tab, select Watermark. Choose a pre-configured watermark, like DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, or DO NOT COPY. For placing a logo or image, Select Watermark > Custom Watermark > Picture watermark > Select Picture. On the same menu you can create a custom text watermark.

Ideally, the watermark should be visible without detracting attention away from the contents of the image itself. For that reason, it's better to use a watermark that's free of any color or anything else that's too eye-catching.

Watermarks can be used to protect confidential information and to indicate the validity of a legal document. You'll also watermarks any paper banknote, where they're used to help prevent counterfeiting.

Opacity Level on a Custom Watermark Many photographers find that a 20 to 30 percent watermark opacity makes their watermark visible but not too intrusive.
