Footnotes should be placed on the same page as their accompanying text. Footnote numbers are placed in superscript, usually at the end of the sentence. If you are referring to a word, place the footnote number directly after the word.

The font size should be at least 12 and no more than 14. (Footnotes may be set out in a smaller font than your main text, but should not be below font size 10.) Leave appropriate spacing for the margins of your page and for paragraphs.

Instead, in the case of footnotes, indicate the page number on which the footnote is found, followed first by a space and then by ?n.? and the footnote number. Note that there is no comma between the page number and the ?n.? and no space between the ?n.? and the footnote number.

The Chicago citation style is the method established by the University of Chicago Press for documenting sources used in a research paper and is probably the most commonly used footnote format.

All footnotes should be left and right-justified (i.e., flush with the right margin), unless this creates awkward spacing.

If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on). For even more formatting options, click the Format button in the lower-left corner.

In law review main text, case names are italicized. In footnote text, use ordinary roman/plain text for case names in a full citation or for case names in a short citation when both parties are referenced. However, in the short cite format when only one party is referenced, italicize the case name.

The footnote citation at the bottom of the page should have the number, and it should also be in superscript. For the note itself, use the same font as the rest of your paper but in a smaller size. For example, if your paper is written in 12 pt. font, then your footnote should be in 10 pt.

Footnotes should be in 10 pt. Times or closest comparable font available, they should be single spaced, and there should be a footnote separator rule (line).

Each footnote should appear at the bottom of the page that includes its numbered in-text reference. For note numbers in the text, use superscript. Indent the first line of each note half an inch like a paragraph in the main text. Use a short line (or rule) to separate footnotes from the main text.
