For proper formatting, keep the equation left-aligned; indent by a half-inch; and after the equation, enter the relevant reference number, enclosed in parentheses, close to the right-hand margin. Use the tab key to achieve proper alignment.

Usually an equation is followed by a comma after it is presented (especially when followed by descriptions of its individual members) or by a period if the sentence has ended. Some journals do not follow the equation with any punctuation marks, relying on the wording of the sentence alone to carry the meaning.

Insert your equation into the center column. Insert your cursor into a space following the table and hit Return. Use the References tab to insert a new caption with the label of Equation.

On the References tab, click ?Insert Caption? from the Captions section of the ribbon. In the Caption pop-up window, select ?Equation? next to Label. This sets both the word and the number as the caption. Optionally, select a Position for the caption and click ?OK? to apply the caption.

Add captions Select the object (table, equation, figure, or another object) that you want to add a caption to. On the References tab, in the Captions group, click Insert Caption. In the Label list, select the label that best describes the object, such as a figure or equation.

Double-click the equation object that you want to edit. Use the symbols, templates, or frameworks on the Equation toolbar to edit the equation. In Word, Excel, or Outlook, to return to your document, click anywhere in the document.

If you include tables, figures, and equations in your documents, they should be properly numbered and cross-referenced. By convention, table captions are above the table; figure captions are below the figure, and equation numbers are to the right of the equation.

Why is the equation editor selection grayed out? You may have saved your document in a format that does not support the Equation Editor. Try selecting ?File? > ?Save As?? and save the document as a ?. docx? file or ?File? > ?Convert? to update the document to the latest format.
