Collapse or expand parts of a document Place your cursor in the heading. On the Home tab, click the arrow in the Paragraph group. In the Paragraph dialog box, click the checkbox next to Collapsed by default. Click OK.

Expand/Collapse is a feature built-in to all the default heading styles in Word except for No Space and Normal. There is no option to disable the Expand/Collapse feature unless you will be using the Normal style or you will be creating a custom style based on the Normal formatting.

To remove the collapsible menu for a particular heading, select the heading and change the style to a normal font style instead of heading 1, 2, or 3. This will remove the collapsible menu for that heading.

Select Extras > Collapse/Expand in the menu. The check mark next to this menu item indicates whether it is enabled (check) or disabled (blank).
