An excise or excise tax (sometimes called an excise duty) is a type of tax charged on goods produced within the country (as opposed to customs duties, charged on goods from outside the country). It is a tax on the production or sale of a good. This tax is now known as the Central Value Added Tax (CENVAT).

Excise duties are imposed in addition to other indirect taxes. Customs duties are an indirect tax imposed by the government on a consumer who imports goods. Customs duties are collected by the government to protect local industries by raising state revenue to offset cheaper manufacturing done abroad.

Duty on goods manufactured domestically and part of an intrastate transaction is known as excise duty. Tariffs are imposed on goods imported or exported by the manufactures of a country to an international country.

The duty that is levied for goods manufactured inside the state is called excise duty. The duty that is levied on goods imported from a foreign country is the customs duty.

Excise taxes are taxes required on specific goods or services like fuel, tobacco, and alcohol. They are primarily taxes that must be paid by businesses, usually increasing prices for consumers indirectly. Excise taxes can be ad valorem (paid by percentage) or specific (cost charged by unit).

The primary function of these duties and levies is to ensure a constant stream of revenue for the State, with a secondary function of discouraging consumption of certain harmful products; i.e. harmful to human health or to the environment.

While excise duty is levied on goods produced or manufactured within the country, custom duty applies to the goods that are sold in India but were produced in a different country. Excise duty is to be paid by the manufacturer of the goods and not by the consumer. Custom duty is to be paid by the importer of the goods.

Excise taxes are commonly levied on cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, soda, gasoline, insurance premiums, amusement activities, and betting, and typically make up a relatively small and volatile portion of state and local and, to a lesser extent, federal tax collections.
