The name server uses your machine's host name as part of your request to find or ?resolve? the IP address of the remote machine. The name server returns this IP address to your local machine if the host name is in its DNS database.

In order to be used by protocols such as TCP and IP, host names are converted into IP addresses using a process known as name resolution. There are different forms of name resolution in the Internet, but the most prevalent and important one uses a distributed database system known as the Domain Name System (DNS).

Name resolution is the process of associating names and IP addresses, and it's one of the most essential services on a network. People understand descriptive names, but network communications require difficult-to-remember addresses.

DNS servers convert URLs and domain names into IP addresses that computers can understand and use. They translate what a user types into a browser into something the machine can use to find a webpage. This process of translation and lookup is called DNS resolution.

A resolution can be of two types ? iterative and recursive. Here, the client requires the Local Server to give either the requested mapping or an error message. A DNS Query is generated by the application program to the resolver to fetch the destination IP Address.

To resolve a name in a domain network, the resolver routine first queries the domain name server database, which may be local if the host is a domain name server or may be on a foreign host. Name servers translate domain names into Internet addresses.

You must add records for each host computer that the DNS server will access. Right-click the zone, and choose the New Host option. Enter the host name and IP address to create an Address (A) record. Check the Pointer (PTR) record check box to enable reverse-lookup entry generation, then click Add Host.

The next time a client attempts to resolve the name, the DNS server returns the second name in the database (which is now the first name) and then sends it to the end of the list, and so on. If netmask ordering is enabled, the DNS server uses the first IP address in the database that matches the subnet of the resolver.
