A superseding formula is a formula that is different from a previously approved formula, but they must share the same class / type designation and the same labeling information.

In its simplest terms, TTB formula approval is required when an alcoholic beverage is produced using non-traditional methods or ingredients. The TTB requires formula approval so that it can: Verify that ingredients used meet FDA requirements and are considered safe. Assign an appropriate tax classification.

A tolerance of plus or minus 0.3 percentage points is allowed for actual alcohol content that is above or below the alcohol content shown on the label.

Formulas Online is TTB's system for drafting, submitting, and tracking formula and sample submissions for domestic and imported alcohol beverages and nonbeverage products.
