Release numbers are used to record the preauthorized order numbers for a product being delivered. Release numbers specify the order number, quantity, and status.

What Does Version Number Mean? A version number is a unique sequence of numbers which identifies the state of development of computer software.

A normal version number MUST take the form X.Y.Z where X, Y, and Z are non-negative integers, and MUST NOT contain leading zeroes. X is the major version, Y is the minor version, and Z is the patch version. Each element MUST increase numerically. For instance: 1.9.0 -> 1.10.0 -> 1.11.0.

The version number of a document in a draft format will start at 0.1 reflecting its draft status and then progress through revision by incrementing the number to the right of the point.

The version number is increased by one digit, depending on the type of changes made in the new versioning. For example, software version 1.3. 1 means that the software is in its first major version, with three additional functionalities added, and one patch fix implemented.

Under the semantic numbering convention (more on this below), the numbers work as follows: First Number: Tracks major changes. Second Number: Tracks minor changes. Third Number: Tracks patches or mere bug fixes. Fourth Number: Tracks changes less significant than a patch.

Reading version numbers The leftmost number (1) is called the major version. The middle number (2) is called the minor version. The rightmost number (3) is called the revision but it may also be referred to as a "point release" or "subminor version".
