If you want to inspect or request certified or uncertified copies of Copyright Office records or deposits, other than Licensing Division records, contact the Records Research and Certification Section. Only staff members of the Copyright Office or the Library of Congress can copy or reproduce copyright deposits.

Copies should be legible, and both words and music on a phonorecord (disk or tape) should be clear and audible. All deposits should bear the title of the work. Copies of a group of works registered as a collection should be assembled in orderly form and fastened together or placed in a folder.

For some works, one copy is required, rather than two. For other works, identifying material is required rather than the published copy itself.

In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section ?Copyright Registration.?

It requires the owner of the copyright or of the exclusive right of distribution to deposit two complete copies of the best edition within three months after the work is published. Mandatory deposit applies to works first published in a foreign country when they are distributed in the United States.

A mailing permit is permission to use a certain postage payment method for commercial mailings. Instructions for applying for a mailing permit are included under each method of payment. There is no fee to apply for a permit to mail with precanceled stamps or a postage meter.

By/For. A By/For Error is logged when the Mail Owner and Mail Preparer are not identified or are not accurate in the eDoc. The Mail Owner and Mail Preparer identifiers (MID, CRID, or Permit) that are provided in the eDoc are checked to see if they exist in Postal Service reference systems.

The indicia must be placed in a clear area that is free from any other text, graphics or markings. The actual size of the indicia must be a minimum of one-half inch high by one-half inch wide. It must be placed no more than 1.5 inches below, or to the left of, the upper right hand corner of your postcard.
