To remove a footnote: Find the superscript reference in the body of the text (not the footer) and delete that superscript. That will remove the superscript and the note in the footer as well as in your text. Any other footnotes will be automatically renumbered as well.

Delete footnotes To delete a footnote, select the footnote reference number that appears in text, and then press Backspace or Delete.
