A plasmid's copy number is the number of molecules that can be found in a single bacterial cell. The number of copies and size of a plasmid are particularly important when it comes to cloning. A few plasmids, particularly the larger ones, are rigorous, requiring only 1-2 copies per cell.

Copy number variations can be generally categorized into two main groups: short repeats and long repeats. However, there are no clear boundaries between the two groups and the classification depends on the nature of the loci of interest.

These are called "relative" cell references, since they change relative to where you copy the formula.
