If your footnotes keep moving to another page in Word, it's because the contents of the footnote are too large for your page's footer. Your page margins might be too small or the font size might be too big.

Footnoting should be numerical and chronological: the first reference is 1, the second is 2, and so on. The advantage of footnoting is that the reader can simply cast their eyes down the page to discover the source of a reference which interests them.

Footnotes should be numbered consecutively in the order they appear throughout your paper. Each note should have a unique number; don't use the same number again even if you cite the same source repeatedly. Footnote numbers are usually placed at the end of the relevant clause or sentence.

Citations listed on the bibliography should be done in alphabetical order. Footnotes and endnotes are numbered sequentially and correspond to a superscript number somewhere in the text. The footnote generally is placed at the bottom of the page where the corresponding number lives.

Footnote Basic format: x. Author's First name Last name, ?Article Title,? Journal Title Volume, Issue No. (Year): page number.

Footnotes should be placed at the bottom of the page on which the corresponding callout is referenced. Alternatively, a footnotes page could be created to follow the reference page.

Move a footnote or an endnote To move or copy a note, you work with the note reference mark in the document window, not with the text of the note. Select the note reference mark. Drag the mark to the new location.

How to Break Up Footnotes in Word Open your Word document. Select your footnote. Right-click and press Paragraph. Select the Line and Page Breaks tab. Uncheck the Keep lines together checkbox. Press Set as Default (if desired) and then press OK to save.
