Using footnotes or endnotes involves placing a superscript number at the end of a sentence with information (paraphrase, quotation or data) that you wish to cite. The superscript numbers should generally be placed at the end of the sentence to which they refer.

FOOTNOTE EXAMPLES: 1. Firstname Lastname, Title (City of publication: Publisher, Year of publication), Page number. 2. Firstname Lastname, ?Article Title,? Journal Title Volume number, Issue number (Year of publication): Page number, Database Name or DOI or URL.

Each footnote should appear at the bottom of the page that includes its numbered in-text reference. For note numbers in the text, use superscript. Indent the first line of each note half an inch like a paragraph in the main text. Use a short line (or rule) to separate footnotes from the main text.

In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and author's name along with other information related to the type of citation.

How to write a footnote. Within the text, place a footnote signal directly after the passage that the footnote relates to. Footnote signals should come after punctuation and at the end of sentences when possible. The only exception is the dash (?), in which case the footnote signal comes before, not after.

Use footnotes and endnotes to explain, comment on, or provide references to something in a document. Usually, footnotes appear at the bottom of the page, while endnotes come at the end of the document or section.

Footnotes should: Include the pages on which the cited information is found so that readers easily find the source. Match with a superscript number (example: 1) at the end of the sentence referencing the source. Begin with 1 and continue numerically throughout the paper.

Add a footnote Click where you want to add the footnote. Click Insert > Insert Footnote. Word inserts a reference mark in the text and adds the footnote mark at the bottom of the page. Type the footnote text.

Go to the Insert menu and click Footnote to open the Footnote and Endnote box. Select the options you want in the Footnote and Endnote box. You can choose between footnotes and endnotes, numbering format, custom marks and symbols, a starting number, and whether to apply the numbering to the whole document.
