One can classify currencies into three monetary systems: fiat money, commodity money, and representative money, depending on what guarantees a currency's value (the economy at large vs. the government's physical metal reserves).

Settlement currency is the currency a vendor selects to be paid out in and the currency in which funds are sent to the vendor's bank account. You can have one settlement currency or multiple, depending on the functionality of your payment processor and the availability of accounts.

Settlement of daily mark to market is carried out on T+1 day basis. Final Settlement is carried out on T+2day basis. Members with a funds pay-in obligation are required to have clear funds in their primary clearing account on or before 8.30 a.m. on the settlement day.

The presentment currency is the currency that's used for charges. The settlement currency is the currency that you can receive payouts in, depending on the charge type and applicable currency conversion.

For example, an investor wants to purchase 1,000 euros with Japanese yen. The exchange rate between these two currencies is 1 EUR to 130 JPY. Here, euros would be the transaction currency, and the Japanese yen would be the settlement currency.

The best-known currencies include the U.S. dollar, euro, Japanese yen, British pound and Swiss franc. Currency symbols exist for most currencies, such as $, ?, ¥ or £. The foreign exchange (FX) markets, however, use ISO (International Organization for Standardization) codes to identify currencies.

The mark to market losses or profits are directly debited or credited to the CMs clearing bank account. On the expiry of the futures contracts, NSE Clearing marks all positions of a CM to the final settlement price and the resulting profit / loss is settled in cash.

1. Foreign exchange (FX) settlement risk is the risk of loss when a bank in a foreign exchange transaction pays the currency it sold but does not receive the currency it bought. FX settlement failures can arise from counterparty default, operational problems, market liquidity constraints and other factors.

The settlement date for stocks and bonds is usually two business days after the execution date (T+2). For government securities and options, it's the next business day (T+1). In spot foreign exchange (FX), the date is two business days after the transaction date.

Once a transaction has been approved, settlement is the second and final step. This is when the issuing bank transfers the funds from the cardholder's account to the payment processor, who then transfers the money to the acquiring bank.
