The main goal of consolidation is to aggregate all of the photos from all of your devices into one central location in order to tackle the process of de-duplicating and organizing those photos. You can read our blog post for a step-by-step process for photo consolidation you might find useful.

If you have a mix of one or more iPhoto libraries and Photos libraries that you would like to merge together, there is no way to directly merge an iPhoto library into a Photos library, or vice versa. What you can do instead is to first migrate the iPhoto libraries that you want to merge over to Photos libraries.

The only way to do it with Apple's own tools is to make all your libraries your iCloud Photos Library in turn, one after the other. Each library will be uploaded into iCloud Photos, and iCloud will merge the libraries, and solve conflicts between duplicates.

To merge the libraries, make the library you want to add your iCloud Photos Library and wait for the library to be uploaded to iCloud. Once this is complete, make your main library again your iCloud Photos Library. Then the merged library will download into your main library.

You can copy referenced files into your photo library so they're easier to back up and are automatically stored in iCloud if iCloud Photos is turned on. In the Photos app on your Mac, select the files that you want to copy into the photo library. Choose File > Consolidate.

Import photos from another library in Photos on Mac If the library you'd like to import into isn't already open, quit Photos, press and hold the Option key as you open Photos, select the library that you want to import your photos to, then click Choose Library. Choose File > Import.

You can create additional photo libraries to organize your photos, albums, and projects, and then switch between the libraries.

Most likely this library is a library created when you first opened photos and it will have migrated the most recently opened iPhoto Library or Aperture Library. If you have plenty of iCloud Storage you could enable iCloud Photo Library.
