Maryland teaching certifications remain valid for five years. At the end of the five-year period, educators complete a renewal process. School systems process renewal requests for their employees. As part of renewing the teaching certification, educators must complete six credits of professional development training.

Teachers are eligible for the SPC I after employment at a Maryland public school. Standard Professional Certificate II (SPC II). Teachers are issued the SPC II after three years of satisfactory professional experience and six semester hours of mandatory coursework.

The Conditional Certificate is issued only at the request of a local school system on behalf of an employee who has not yet met the requirements for professional certification.

All Maryland educators must pass the same set of exams to become fully licensed to teach in the state. First, candidates must pass a basic skills test. The Praxis Core meets this requirement. Exceptional scores on the SAT, ACT, or GRE tests may replace the basic skills exam requirement.

You must complete six hours of CPD every five years to renew your teaching certificate. School systems will offer CPD courses to teachers through their CPD liaison. You will be assigned a renewal month, either January or July. Your teaching certificate would then be renewed in January or July of every fifth year.

Teacher Certification Process The process is as follows: After receiving a Bachelor's or Master's degree, completing all requirements of the teacher preparation program, and meeting all MSDE guidelines, teacher candidates are eligible for certification through MSDE.

The Conditional Certification serves as an official record of prequalification and alerts prospective employers to the availability of the tax credit if this person is hired.

To renew, a teacher shall submit 6 semester hours of acceptable credit, which must include at least one credit, continuing professional development credit, or continuing education unit related to the maintenance of knowledge of Braille code, as part of or in addition to, the regular renewal requirements for educators.
