A MARC record is composed of three elements: the record structure, the content designation, and the data content of the record.

MARC 21 Format for Classification Data consists of a Summary Statement of Content Designators followed by a detailed presentation of each content designator. Following the descriptions of the Leader and the Directory, the variable control fields are arranged in field tag order (001-008).

Using the MARC standard prevents duplication of work and allows libraries to better share bibliographic resources. Choosing to use MARC enables libraries to acquire cataloging data that is predictable and reliable.

NOTE: See MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data (260 Publication, Distribution, Etc. (Imprint)) for code definitions not given below. Field 260 contains the place of publication, publisher and/or distributor, date of publication, as well as the place, name, and date of manufacture when necessary.

Field: This is the term used to describe the various sections of cataloging information. Following AACR2 rules, each area of information from the complete cataloging record is given a field in MARC. These fields make up the MARC record.

Data classification is the process of organizing data into categories that make it easy to retrieve, sort and store for future use. A well-planned data classification system makes essential data easy to find and retrieve.

MARC is an acronym for MAchine Readable Cataloging. This is a computerized method of recording the information needed in a cataloging record: the descriptive cataloging, subject headings and other access points, and classification numbers and other call number information.

Four data classifications are used by the university: Controlled Unclassified Information, Restricted, Controlled and Public. The Data Trustee is ultimately responsible for deciding how to classify their data (see Roles and Responsibilities for list of Data Trustees and additional information).

MARC tagging is variety of codes, usually called tags, indicators, and delimiters, to signal to a computer that a certain type of information is following the code so that it can format it correctly and allow proper searching.
