One of the more common ways to present age brackets in a survey is to use a closed question, where respondents are asked to select their age from a range of age group categories, presented in a format similar to the following: What is your age group?

Age (or birth date) Under 12 years old. 12-17 years old. 18-24 years old. 25-34 years old. 35-44 years old. 45-54 years old. 55-64 years old. 65-74 years old.

As a very rough rule of thumb, 200 responses will provide fairly good survey accuracy under most assumptions and parameters of a survey project. 100 responses are probably needed even for marginally acceptable accuracy.

The age group method can also be used in educational research to complete bio-data questions. This method involves creating specific age categories and placing ages within a range in these categories. For instance, you can create age categories like 1?10, 21?30, 5?9. As you would notice, these ranges are in 5s and 10s.

There are a number of ways of asking about age. You can ask respondents to select an age band. The most commonly used age bands for consultation with adults are 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64 and 65 and over.

The results are the following; a low age increases the possibility to leave a survey incomplete and a high age increases the interaction while doing the survey.
