This is the age at which a person gains the legal status of an adult. The legal age is set by state law and can differ from state to state. However, almost all states set the base legal age as 18 years old.

Upon reaching the age of majority, a person becomes of legal age and receives certain rights and responsibilities. For most states, 18 is the age of majority. Only Alabama (19), Nebraska (19), Mississippi (21) and Pennsylvania (21) have it set at other ages.

(The age of majority for signing contracts is 18 in most states, except Alabama and Nebraska, where it is 19, and Indiana, Mississippi, New York and Puerto Rico, where it is 21.

Although 18 years is the legal contract age in most states, there are several exceptions?such as the case of emancipation. If the minor hasn't reached the legal contract age but is granted legal status by a court of law, he/she may enter into contracts.

If you live in the District of Columbia (DC), Indiana, Mississippi, or New York, the age of majority is 21. In every other state, it's 18.

Contracts made by minors are void since, by law, they lack the legal capacity or ability to enter into legally binding agreements or contracts by themselves. The law presumes that these individuals are not fully aware of what they are doing and as such, are placed into special categories.

RA 6809 provides that the minority age in the Philippines has been lowered from twenty-one years old (21 years old) to eighteen years old (18 years old). A minor needs parental consent before he can enter into an ordinary contract. If he goes ahead without such consent, the contract is not however void.

Article 1318 of the Civil Code states that no contract exists unless there is a concurrence of consent of the parties, object certain as subject matter, and cause of the obligation established. Article 1327 provides that insane or demented persons cannot give consent to a contract.
