Generally, most public and private schools will allow students to come back to finish their high school courses before they're 21 but once they hit that age, they need to find other options to get their diploma. For some, that means pursuing a high school equivalency credential.

Lela Burden received an honorary high school diploma at the age of 111, which makes Burden the oldest high school graduate in the world. Burden originally attended Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia in 1918.

If you graduated from high school, contact the school district from which you graduated to request your diploma and transcript.

If you haven't graduated yet, you have the right to be in school until the June after your 21st birthday. If you leave school, you have the right to go back at any time until you earn a diploma or turn 21. Your school can't kick you out because you are too old, don't have enough credits, or have poor grades.
