Barbecuing is not permitted in the following areas: athletic fields, playgrounds, woodlands (North Woods, the Ramble, Hallett Nature Sanctuary), landscapes that are fenced off, the Conservatory Garden, and high trafficked areas. You must have a Special Event permit to hold any event with more than 20 people in a park or on a beach, including barbecues and parties. You will be advised if you need any additional permits for your event once you submit the application. There is a $25 non-refundable processing fee for all Special Events permits.

To reserve an NYC Parks athletic field or court, organized leagues or individuals must request a permit. You can apply online or request a paper application. Apply for a field and court permit.

In city parks, a permit is required for any public or private event on parkland where more than 20 people are expected to attend, or to reserve a specific park location (even with fewer than 20 people).

Picnic Permits & ReservationsPermits are only needed if you have 20 or more people in your group. If you have less than 20 people, you are not required to have a permit; however, it is the only way to guarantee that your desired location will be available.

Things to Know Before You Apply. Special Events permits cost $25 to process, and the fee cannot be waived waived (except when requesting an NYC Parks group volunteer project).

You must have a permit to use a Pavilion, even if your group size is under 10 people. (Check the fee schedule for the correct fees. Permits are issued starting at 10AM and ending at 6PM (unless an earlier end-time is requested.) You may, however, remain in the park until ½ past sundown.

A picnic basket, a blanket, and Central Park, of course! The Park is home to lawns, benches, and picnic tables across its 843 acres, providing countless great picnic spots. Just remember: Please carry out your trash and recycling with you back to your home base, or better yet, pack your picnic in reusable containers.

Grilling or Barbecuing is not allowed in Central Park, except on three specific days each year. These days are the only exceptions to the rules, which are strictly enforced in the park: Memorial Day
