Generally, a change is warranted only when an operation encounters a significant and permanent change to its operating paradigm. A change could result from a discrete event, such as an acquisition or reorganization of a reporting entity, or it could occur over time.

The functional currency rules allow some taxpayers to choose to work out their taxable income or tax loss by using a non-A$ currency as their applicable functional currency (FC). All amounts disclosed on the company tax return must be disclosed in A$.

You simply need to translate all items of assets and liabilities into the new functional currency using the exchange rate at the date of change. For non-monetary items, this amount will be the item's new historical cost. It means that you are NOT going to update the recalculation at the year-end with the closing rate.

When calculating the present value, a lessee should discount the foreign currency lease payments to present value and then remeasure that present value into the functional currency using the exchange rate at lease commencement. The discount rate should be the rate implicit in a lease.

37 The effect of a change in functional currency is accounted for prospectively. FASB ASC 842 increases disclosure and visibility into the leasing obligations of both public and private organizations. Prior to ASC 842, most leases were not included on the balance sheet.
