What Are Footnotes? Pick up any financial report and you'll always find references to the footnotes of the financial statements. The footnotes describe in detail the practices and reporting policies of the company's accounting methods and disclose additional information that can't be shown in the statements themselves.

Comprehensive footnote disclosures, which are found at the end of reviewed and audited financial statements, provide valuable insight into a company's operations. Unfortunately, most people don't take the time to read footnotes in full, causing them to overlook key details.

The elements of the financial statements will be assets, liabilities, net assets/equity, revenues and expenses. It is noted in Study 1 that moving along the spectrum from cash to accrual accounting does not mean a loss of the cash based information which can still be generated from an accrual accounting system.

Hence, the contingent liabilities are shown as a footnote or explanatory notes in the balance sheet of a firm as per Convention of full disclosure.

Footnotes are notes indicated in your text with numbers and placed at the bottom of the page. They're used to provide: Citations (e.g., in Chicago notes and bibliography) Additional information that would disrupt the flow of the main text.

Footnotes may provide additional information used to clarify various points. This can include further details about items used as a reference, clarification of any applicable policies, a variety of required disclosures, or adjustments made to certain figures.

A footnote is indicated with a superscript numeral (like this1) within the text that corresponds to the same numeral at the bottom of the page, which is followed by the reference or additional information. The footnote should be included directly following the text it pertains to, usually after any punctuation.
