Categorize Footnote Article For Free

The footnote contains the number of the citation followed by a period and then the citation itself. The citation always includes the author's name and the title of the text, and it always ends with a period. Full notes also include all the relevant publication information in parentheses (which varies by source type).

Footnote Basic format: x. Author's First name Last name, ?Article Title,? Journal Title Volume, Issue No. (Year): page number.

Footnote/Endnote Last Name, "Article Title," Journal Title Issue, number (date): page cited, doi or URL (if online). Short version: Author Last Name, "Article Title (shortened if necessary)," page cited.

You can put more than one citation in the same footnote. You would create only one note, placing a semicolon (;) between the citations.

When you quote directly from a source, enclose the quoted section in quotation marks. Add a footnote number at the end of the quote. The footnote number should be in superscript, and be placed after any punctuation, like this: "Here's a direct quote."

Footnotes are listed at the bottom of the page on which a citation is made. A numeral is placed in the text to indicate the cited work and again at the bottom of the page in front of the footnote. A footnote lists the author, title and details of publication, in that order.

Each footnote should appear at the bottom of the page that includes its numbered in-text reference. For note numbers in the text, use superscript. Indent the first line of each note half an inch like a paragraph in the main text. Use a short line (or rule) to separate footnotes from the main text.
