The Fairphone 4 ? a user-repairable smartphone built using ethically sourced materials ? is finally coming to the US, almost two years after it first debuted back in September 2021.

Nothing's new smartphone will be available globally this time. Carl Pei's Nothing made good on its promise: The company's new flagship smartphone, Nothing Phone 2, will be available in the U.S. The company started the pre-orders for Nothing Phone 2 on Tuesday, with the phone's general availability date being July 17.

A lack of carrier partnerships and a lack of proven marketability were likely the primary reasons behind this move. However, just because the phone isn't sold here doesn't mean you can't use the Nothing Phone 1 in the US. You just can't buy one and have it shipped to a US address.

It will be available in the US and Canada on July 17th at 4AM Eastern starting at $599 (and an oddly high $929 CAD) for a version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Pay $699 ($999 CAD) and you'll get 12GB of RAM with 256GB of storage, while the top-end 12GB/512GB configuration sells for $799 ($1,099 CAD).

Soft-launching through a ?Beta Membership,? the Nothing Phone 1 is finally available for Americans who are willing to be a part of Nothing's test program before it officially launches with retailers later in 2023.

In several conversations over the past year, Pei has explained why Nothing had to build toward the Phone (1) with wireless earbuds first, and why they couldn't just launch the phone in U.S. It really comes down to the numbers and logistics. For a startup, the Ear (1) was in many ways a test to gauge demand.
