The only way to get your Canadian Amateur Radio Operator Certificate is to successfully complete the Canadian basic amateur qualification examination with a mark of 70% or greater.

A station licence is not required for Canadian boaters in Canadian waters, but you will need a VHF Station Licence if you plan to voyage in US waters. Plans for a reciprocal agreement relieving Canadian boaters of this requirement were abandoned due to the change in security attitudes following 9/11.

Amateur Radio in Canada is regulated by a federal government department called Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED; formerly Industry Canada). The first level of authorization is the Amateur Radio Operator Certificate with the Basic Qualification.

The written exam consists of 25 multiple-choice questions and you should be able to complete the exam in less than one hour. Your certificate will be issued by Industry Canada from their office in Ontario.

All radio apparatus must be licensed under the Radiocommunication Act unless it is only capable of receiving broadcasting or is exempted under the applicable standard of the Radiocommunication Regulations . There is a separate fee for each transmit and each receive frequency.
