Emery cloth differs to sandpaper in several ways: Emery cloth has the abrasive glued to a cloth rather than paper, which makes it far sturdier and less inclined to tear in use. Emery cloth uses a form of corundum (or corundite) as the abrasive, rather than sand. Emery is longer lasting than sand as a glued abrasive.

You see, sandpaper is made of abrasive minerals like aluminum oxide or garnet that are glued onto a paper backing. These minerals have sharp points or edges, and that's why sandpaper is considered a cutting tool like a saw or a chisel.

There are five general types which are widely available in most paint and hardware stores. These are: flint, garnet, emery, aluminum oxide and silicon carbide.

Emery is rated on the average grit size, glued to the backing. Common sizes are, from coarse to fine: 40, 46, 54, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 180, 220, 320, F, and FF. A 46 or 54 grade cloth is used on roughly filed work, while 220 to 320 grit cloth will give a good polish.

The grit size indicates the abrasive grade on the abrasive side of the paper. A higher grit number indicates a smaller abrasive grain and a finer abrasive product. A ?P? in front of the grit size indicates that the product is graded in ance with the European FEPA standard (.fepa-abrasives.org.
