Architects have traditionally used tracing paper since light can pass through it from its low opacity. However, architects also commonly use other paper for different designs like layout paper and sketch paper. Architects these days also use plotter paper, which works hand-in-hand with plotter machines.

In a very dim room or in the dark: pour the potassium ferricyanide and iron(III) ammonium citrate solutions together into a petri dish. Stir the solution to mix it. Use tongs to drag a sheet of paper across the top of the mixture or else paint the solution onto the paper using a paintbrush.

Vellum is what many know as traditional blueprint paper, and it is commonly used for architectural and engineering plans for black-and-white blueprints. It is also possible to print blueprints on Mylar paper, which is transparent or frosted, by using a laser process.

In 1842, an English photographer, chemist and astronomer named John Herschel discovered that combining ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide created a chemical reaction and a compound called blue ferric ferrocyanide (or Prussian blue).

The process of blueprint printing takes several steps. Once the high-quality scans have been taken of your original drawing, the blueprints are typically printed on professional-grade, rolled bond paper using wide-format printers. In most cases, 20 lb bond paper is used.

Tracing paper is another essential for working out your home design on paper. It's also sometimes called vellum paper. There's no scale considerations, so you just want to make sure you get the right size. Again it's helpful if the pad is glue bound or in book form.

A lot of architectural offices have firm branded letter sized pads of 1/42033 dot or 1/82033 grid paper. Those sizes both nicely translate to the common 1/82033 = 12032 scale that is widely used in formal drawings in architectural practice. Personally- for figuring out a gross idea, I like working down a roll of 122033 trace.
