Caller ID authentication technology enables subscribers to trust that callers are who they say they are, reducing the effectiveness of fraudulently spoofed calls.

Attestation is a crucial part of the STIR/SHAKEN process and includes three categories to determine essential information about the caller by evaluating the ?attestation? level of each call. These attestation levels distinguish a caller's validity to use a specific number.

STIR/SHAKEN digitally validates the handoff of phone calls passing through the complex web of networks, allowing the phone company of the consumer receiving the call to verify that a call is in fact from the number displayed on Caller ID.

SHAKEN/STIR goes further, and enables originating carriers to digitally sign the call with an Attestation Level. The Attestation Level applied to the call indicates the certainty level of the originating provider and whether the caller is actually allowed to use the Caller ID.

What does an attestation rating of C mean for a call? An attestation rating of C means that the telecom carrier does not know the caller's identity. This is the lowest level of attestation. Some carriers have a policy to block all calls that are transmitted with a C attestation.

Gateway Attestation (C) - The identity of the caller is not known, as the call originated outside of the network, or internationally. C level is applied when A or B cannot be.

Gateway Attestation (C) ? The service provider has authenticated from where it received the call, but cannot authenticate the call source. An example of this case would be a call received from an international gateway.

"Gateway Attestation", "C", indicates the call can only be verified as coming from a known gateway, for instance, a connection to another service provider.
