Formatting Footnotes Footnotes should be indented as you would indent a paragraph. If a footnote must run over onto a new page, break it in midsentence so that readers do not think they have read the entire note.

In both MLA and APA, a footnote example includes the citation found at the bottom, or foot, of the page corresponding to the superscript number found in the body of the work. The footnote might consist of the type of work and author's name along with other information related to the type of citation.

The footnote/endnote begins with the same superscript number as the one that appears in the paper and is followed by a period. Footnotes/endnotes always include a specific page number or numbers where the cited information can be found. The first footnote/endnote to a source provides the full publishing information.

The footnote contains the number of the citation followed by a period and then the citation itself. The citation always includes the author's name and the title of the text, and it always ends with a period. Full notes also include all the relevant publication information in parentheses (which varies by source type).

Open ?Word Options? box by clicking ?File? then ?Options?. In the box open, click ?Display? and ensure the ?Print hidden text? box is not checked and click ?OK?. For endnotes, the procedure is very much the same.

In short, the usual workaround is to change the footnote/endnote styles (i.e. styles 'Footnote Text' and 'Endnote Text') to 'Hidden' under the Style settings choose Font then Hidden Text.

Each footnote should appear at the bottom of the page that includes its numbered in-text reference. For note numbers in the text, use superscript. Indent the first line of each note half an inch like a paragraph in the main text. Use a short line (or rule) to separate footnotes from the main text.
