To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).

Please try clicking on the Review tab of the Ribbon, then on the Accept icon and choosing Accept All Changes in Document. On the same tab make sure Track Changes is switched to OFF. If there are any comments, right-click on each one and choose Delete. Then your footnotes should update correctly.

When you write footnotes, you can choose to format them at the bottom of the page (footnotes) or on a separate page at the end of the paper (endnotes). Place your endnotes after the reference list on a separate page with its own title: Endnotes. This is where you can list all your notes.

If your footnote numbers are out of sequence, chances are one or more of the references is not actually a footnote. To find out, double-click it: if it is a footnote, the footnote editing window opens, if it isn't, nothing happens.
