RF is generated by a transmitter and detected by a receiver. The transmitter antenna turns electrical signals into radio waves, giving it the ability to travel long distances. The receiver antenna catches the radio waves and turns them back into electrical signals, which feed into a radio, television, telephone, etc.

The basic principle is simple. At one end, a transmitter ?encodes? or modulates messages by varying the amplitude or frequency of the wave ? a bit like Morse code. At the other, a receiver tuned to the same wavelength picks up the signal and 'decodes' it back to the desired form: sounds, images, data, etc.

Radio works by transmitting and receiving electromagnetic waves. The radio signal is an electronic current moving back and forth very quickly. A transmitter radiates this field outward via an antenna; a receiver then picks up the field and translates it to the sounds heard through the radio.

In order to transmit data via a radio link, the data, which is typically presented to the radio in a digital format (i.e. 1's and 0's), has to be converted to an analog, voice-like signal. This process is reversed on the receive end. The circuitry that performs this conversion is called a modem.

Any devices that are used for transmitting data, such as radio receivers, TV antennas, WiFi routers and cell phones will use radio waves. Both kinds of frequencies can be detected with a handheld detector. RF detectors can be used in countersurveillance.
