These marks are like ballistic fingerprints. If investigators recover bullets from a crime scene, forensic examiners can test-fire a suspect's gun, then compare the marks on the crime scene bullet to marks on the test-fired bullet.

The comparison microscope serves as the single most important tool to a firearms examiner. Two bullets can be observed and compared simultaneously within the same field of view.

A comparison microscope is the instrument required to identify these marks (see Figure 15.11). Often, however, bullets are so badly deformed or fragmented that not enough area remains on which to find striations.

Skid marks (slippage) form on the bearing surface of bullets as they enter the rifling of the barrel before the bullet engages the rifling. Skid marks are typically produced by revolvers and have the appearance of widening the land impressions at the nose of the bullet.

The first step in the Comparison Process is to test fire the firearm into a water tank in the lab. The second step involves using a comparison microscope to compare the test bullet to the bullet recovered from the victim or crime scene.

On bullets, the class characteristics are the rifling specifications of the barrel from which the bullet was fired. These include caliber, number of lands and grooves, direction of twist of the lands and grooves, and widths of the lands and grooves.

Once a bullet has been retrieved, it is usually marked with the investigator's initials, often at the tip or base of the bullet. The sides of the bullet should not be marked.

Ballistics experts test guns and spent bullets in criminal cases to prove guilt or innocence of crime suspects. They make microscopic comparisons between gun barrel flaws and the bullets found at a crime scene. They analyze bullet shots, angles and gun powder to determine their source.

Forensic scientists are the people who analyze the evidence collected at the crime scene. Forensic scientists perform both a chemical and a physical analysis on the evidence that has been submitted.
