Recommended minimum resolution for printing is 300 DPI; computer monitors generally have a display setting of 72 DPI or 96 DPI. If we indicate that some of your images have low resolution, they may not look bad on your monitor but will likely print blurry or jagged.

High resolution for print is defined as 300-350 dots per inch (DPI) at the final output size. Files with resolutions higher than 350 dpi are ok to send for print, but not necessary, and the higher resolution will not improve the printed quality of your project.

EXAMPLE OF A LOW RESOLUTION FILE This is an example of a 4" x 6" postcard or flyer with low resolution (72 dpi). Notice that all the text and graphics look blurry, fuzzy, and pixelated. There is no process with printing that will make this look good. Your print will come out as bad as it looks on your screen.

At 300 PPI, an image will appear sharp and crisp. This is considered to be high resolution or high-res. Images below 200 PPI are considered low resolution or low-res. Low-res images will appear pixelated and blurred after printing even though they might look perfect on your computer screen.

Low Resolution Images Images used on the internet are typically 72 dpi. This is a suitable resolution for websites since it enables a small file size and does not look visibly pixelated on most computer screens. However, images at 72 dpi will ALWAYS look pixelated and low-resolution when printed.

To check a photo's resolution on a Windows PC, select the file you want to use. Right-click on the image and then select "Properties." A window will appear with the image's details. Go to the "Details" tab to see the image's dimensions and resolution.

So the higher the DPI, the more detail and clarity will be present in an image. For example, if you have two images with different resolutions ? one at 72 dpi and another at 300 dpi ? then the 300 dpi image will appear much sharper than its lower-resolution counterpart due to its increased level of detail.

Open File Explorer and navigate to your image. Right-click on the image file and select Properties. Click the Details tab at the top bar. Scroll down to find image Dimensions and the DPI Resolution.
