Your existing messages will not be deleted, and if you switch to a new number or an email address, you will continue being able to send/receive messages.

If the recipient changed their number, you can keep sending messages to the old number, but they will not be received by the same person. When a number is disconnected, the telephone company will typically keep the number out of service for 90 days before making it available for re-use (this may vary between carriers.)

Using the Change Number feature in WhatsApp will migrate your profile information, groups and settings from your old phone number to your new phone number. It will also delete the account linked with your old phone number, so your contacts can no longer see your old phone number in their WhatsApp contact list.

If you select Custom..., you'll need to search for or select the contacts you want to notify, then tap Done. Your group chats are automatically notified when you change your phone number, regardless of whether you choose to notify your contacts.

After inserting the required old and new phone numbers, WhatsApp will ask which contacts have to be notified about your new number. Note that also if you don't want to notify your contacts, all your groups will be notified regardless.
