A Subject Alternate Name (or SAN) certificate is a digital security certificate which allows multiple hostnames to be protected by a single certificate. A SAN certificate may also be called a Unified Communication Certificate (or UCC), a multi-domain certificate, or an Exchange certificate.

Select SSL Certificates and then select Manage for the certificate you want to change. Select Change Subject Alternative Names. For Add a domain, enter the SAN you want to add and then select Add. If you want to add multiple SANs, you can separate them with commas or enter them one at a time.

Server Name Indication (SNI) is an extension to the TLS protocol. It allows a client or browser to indicate which hostname it is trying to connect to at the start of the TLS handshake. This allows the server to present multiple certificates on the same IP address and port number.

An SNI certificate is a type of SSL certificate that allows you to secure multiple domain names on one IP address. These certificates are cheaper and easier to manage than traditional wildcard certificates. They also offer security because they use 2048-bit SSL encryption.

IP SSL certificates are associated with unique IP addresses. SNI SSL certificates are associated with hostnames. IP SSL certificates can be used on shared servers only if a dedicated IP address is assigned to the website. SNI SSL certificates can be used with both dedicated as well as shared servers.

Although SNI stands for Server Name Indication, what SNI actually "indicates" is a website's hostname, or domain name, which can be separate from the name of the web server that is actually hosting the domain.

If you want to secure multiple websites with a single SSL certificate, a SAN SSL certificate is the option for you. If you want to use a distinct SSL certificate for each different website, you need to implement SNI.

If your chassis doesn't support adding SANs, you'll need to get the key off the chassis and generate the CSR with openssl. Make sure req_extensions = v3_req is uncommented in the req section. Add the subjectAltName to the v3_req section. Generate a new CSR.

If you are looking to secure just a single domain, you will want to generate a standard CSR. If you purchase a (mt) Media Temple SSL generating a CSR is not required.
