THREE LETTER CALLS Radio and television station identification - expressed in a series of three or four letters of the alphabet - goes back to the days of the telegraphy when operators keyed a few characters to identify themselves when contacting or ?calling? each other.

The station operator may choose the two or three letters that follow the standardised prefix, or may select to have them assigned sequentially by IRUC. To denote that the station broadcasts on the Internet (or via other wireless systems), the "-DB" suffix follows the assigned call letters.

Intentional radiation is the most straightforward type of RF output that Part 15b governs. It refers to radiation that the device deliberately produces to communicate with other devices. When you connect to wifi or call a friend, your phone is acting as an intentional radiator.

By international agreement, all call signs starting with the letters K, N and W, as well as AAA-ALZ, are reserved exclusively for use in the United States. AM, FM, TV and shortwave broadcasting stations can request their own call letters, as long as they are unique.

In the United States, broadcast stations have call signs of three to seven characters in length, including suffixes for certain types of service, but the minimum length for new stations is four characters, and seven-character call signs result only from rare combinations of suffixes.

The U.S. was assigned the prefixes K, N, and W, and hams were initially told to use W as a prefix. They simply affixed the letter to their call signs. So, 8ABC became W8ABC. Eventually, so many amateur radio licenses would be issued that hams would eventually be issued licenses that began with the prefix K.

In the U.S., Part 97 is the section of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations that pertains to amateur radio and the conduct of amateur radio operators. It is a part of Title 47 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR).

November 2, 2020, marks the 100th anniversary of what is widely recognized as the first commercial radio broadcast when Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh, under the call sign KDKA, broadcast the live returns of the Harding-Cox presidential election.
